Yes I think so. Qualitative research should always be reasoned well, and there should be enough clarification, but I do not think this should be too strict.
Why, we need flexibility in ethical guidelines in any research either it is qualitative or quantitative. My dear, All ethical principles should be meticulously followed by researchers in any kind of research.
Could you please illustrate, how guide lines mean flexible?
Hi Nazia,
I guess, it has to do with the nature of research design. Especially in the qualitative designs, where we deal with human experiences and emotions and the guidelines set prior to study may have to be amended during the process of research due to complexities that may arise. By complexities, I mean, the emotional attachments that may come during the process (though we are not supposed to have emotional attachment) between participant and researcher. However, we are human and we feel pain in others' pain too and it is likely that we may be affected by it or it is likely that participant may be affected. So, may be we need to have leave some spaces to deal with such complexities. Please, give your opinion on this regard.
"Guidelines," by definition, "guide" us. No guideline forces us to follow it. If it did it would be a rule, or even a requirement. It would have to be enforced. Guidelines are not enforced. The "punishment" for failure to follow them is usually no more than a "tut, tut". Tut, tuts can be poo-pooed!
