It appears to me, at least, that some questions remain unanswered after a period of time which suggests that a quality reply isn't going to happen. Indeed, perhaps the best responses are close to the date of posting and then the quality falls off and repetition occurs. Later posters do not read the earlier text and the quality of the entire thread suffers as a result with the good results hidden under dross or comments such as 'Interesting discussion' or 'Following'.
Would it be reasonable for threads to be taken off stream and archived say after a period of one year? By then all the quality responses that would have come have had a chance to evolve and long vacuous threads going nowhere are taken off the books.

This is an interesting question, even I would like to suggest a period of 6 month. Even so, the problem appear if someone try to search a question before to post it.
Maybe a better option than delete the threads, it would be blocking the responses, in order to avoid the nonsense comment. In addition, other option could be to only save the question and the two or three more recommended answers.

All topics are useful for future users. RG should have a machanism to connect new questions with already preswnt topics.

Grzegorz Boczkaj Yes, I agree. Would be simple to archive answers. Indeed the search function in RG picks up these discussions and questions that have died a natural death. People don't use the search function often enough and ask the same question that's been posed and answered some years back.
I'm advocating 'capital punishment' for threads that have outlived their usefulness.
