Journal publications tend to get more citations. However conceptual and theoretical contributions are not generally sought after by journals and may get good visibility as part of a good edited book.
Throughout my career I have always counseled my students to aim for the highest, and I do so today.

Book chapters won't be get much citation as compared to papers. For early career researchers one/two book chapters can give you credit, but remember that you will be evaluated mainly on papers, so keep the ratio of books/papers low.
It would be better to publish your research paper in some reputed journal for its greater visibility, which would help in increased citations of your research work.
As per opinion, i would be better to publish in good journal, it will help to increase citation of your work rather than publish book chapter.
Both are good, but I prefer to publish my research paper in a journal because it gives more popularity to my paper.

According to me, you should first try to get it published in the reputed journals. However, both are better options.
Publishing research papers in journal carries more weightage in career than books. Reputed, standard journals have better quality control mechanism. So content of the research gets better opportunity for corrections.

I accept with you but some important points are to be considered as well...
1. For freshers, go with the papers first and in later stage go for chapters.
2. Both papers and chapters from good and hot research will get good views, downloads and citations.
3. In case of articles, only those published in reputed publishers will get good citations in low time.
4. New journals will get indexed very slow.
5. Where as in Books, can be indexed individually in most of the indexing cites and your chapter will get good citations, views and downloads.
6. If you want to contribute a chapter, go with any reputed Editor to increase your Book value and market as well.
7. Books published by reputed publishers will carry more weightage during any interview in research Institutes and Universities with some exceptions.

You must be knowing that scientific publications can be categorized as primary, secondary, and tertiary publications based on their position in the publication cycle. Whether you select a book or journal is dependent upon the type of article you make. If it is an original research paper, select a primary journal with good impact factor. If it is a review paper, you can select secondary review journals or even books.
