I would not consider this facebook experiment to be "more intelligent". It's just that it developed its own language (or dialect?) the supervisors were unwilling to learn. Just one more AI experiment that went off the rails.

Re the headline question: I don't think humans are basically capable to develop anything "more intelligent than them". Could be that one day a machine might develop "intellect", but I think there's still a lot of work to do.

One of the challenges will be to "guide" such a system without restricting it too much. Whoever raised a child: this can be a tedious task. Current approaches are still "blue-eyed". Thus one should not be too surprised when harvesting some black eye.

For me the big issue is how to validate whether a machine is more intelligent than a human. What kind of tests should be considered good enough to test this hypothesis? IQ test? There are many other questions like this, therefore, an initial question would be: how can we make machines smarter than the humans who build them? What components, characteristics or behaviors determine brilliance and intelligence. It is a question we struggle even at the human level. I am optimistic that artificial intelligence can grow, but to surpass human intelligence, it is very early to say. Fields like natural language processing, computer vision, and voice recognition are stepping stones for growing intelligence, so experts in these areas are more qualified to provide opinions on the matter. Great question, nonetheless.

No matter the kind of machine developed, it will still rely on human intelligence for build-up and functionalities. Therefore the intelligence of any machine is subjective. So should humans develop machines more intelligent than them? might just be rhetorical

I see your point, but I think it is possible for humans to greatly "out-pace" themselves with findings on human behavior (esp. from new perspective and from using new eye-tracking and computer-analysis technologies).
