The main thing I am interested in here, is whether heutagogy is a valid instructional approach for non-formal teaching & learning situations. Please tell me what you think!
Heutagogy is used is a self determined approach in learning
This is used specially in distance education. This can be used for social media. This approach give more autonomy to the learners.this is the latest approach in learning
In my personal opinion, by definition it should be an approach mostly for non-formal teaching and learning, however, it is definitely a task, even a duty, of current (and future) formal education to teach the students heutagogical approaches for application in non-formal learning situation. The level of student autonomy in case of heutagogical approach is extremely high, while the instructor control and course structuring is low - which is typical mostly for non-formal learning situations. So, as I see it, we should teach the students how to learn autonomously without any need of instructor's support, how to choose the right learning strategies and sources of information - at the school level, in a formal setting, so then those methods would become natural and automatic for use in the non-formal setting.
Thank you Irshad and Daria. I understand the need to transfer control over the learning from the teacher to the learner, but I don't know why this means that only non-formal learning situations are best for heutagogy. This also raises several issues that I am not so certain about:
1) What strategies work best to support the transfer process (from teacher to student);
2) What might be the role of technology in this transfer process; and
3) How to measure the effectiveness of heutagogy as an overall transfer approach.
Any further comments that can be made about these issues would be most welcome, and I hope that other people will provide input as well...Tony
Depends on what you mean by heutagogy. If it pivots around self directed learning in the classical sense (so nót distance learning or being left to do all by yourself in splendid isolation), then there is an important role for teachers and peers to provide for the feelings of relatedness to occur that can make having more autonomy instructive to SDL, instead of paralyzing the learner. You can find more about this relationship in the discussion of our latest paper on SDL:
