Looking for any reliable statistics on how sports participation looked like in Ukraine prior to the war. I can't seem to find any reasonable numbers on this, at least not in English. Appreciate any help I can get.
Hi Professor Pavlova, thanks for your reply. I am looking for any sort of basic data on sports participation across the Ukrainian population, preferably as membership in sports clubs. I will settle with anything less too - do you have any idea where I could find such a statistic?
Dear Tony, such information is not available in a summarized form, it is available in very different documents and in the Ukrainian language. I will give only some generalized data as an example.
For example, in the passport of the budget program for 2021, it is confirmed that the number of athletes of national teams in Olympic and non-Olympic sports is 6,911.
There are data for 2018 on winter Olympic sports - 11,625 athletes are studying in 136 branches of children's and youth sports schools, 571 coaches are working, 282 athletes are practicing in 18 branches of schools of higher skill, 331 students are studying in 8 branches of Olympic reserve schools. Under the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, a national team of winter Olympic sports has been formed in the number of 479 athletes (main team, candidates, reserves).
The reconstruction project of Ukraine for 2022 (statistical data for June 2022) states that only 35% of athletes continue their training at the workplace of children's and youth and reserve sports institutions (162,000 people), almost 44,000 more - outside the institutions, 28,000 athletes train abroad. More than 120,000 athletes have lost the opportunity to practice their chosen sport and have no opportunity to train.
There are separate statistics on sports for persons with disabilities. About 52,000 disabled people was covered by various forms of physical education and rehabilitation and sports work in Ukraine: with vision, musculoskeletal, hearing, cerebral palsy, mental and physical disabilities.
