What is the best method for testing the shear properties of a wire, fiber, or filament? In the literature I have reviewed, most studies only focus on basic tensile testing and do not consider the shear properties. I want to study the isotropy of extruded fibers of different materials ranging from 0.2 mm to 3 mm in diameter.
Edit: I am interested in a variety of materials, but engineering thermoplastics (both amorphous and semi-crystalline) and particulate composites with a hard polymer matrix are of the most interest.
Maybe you could supply some more information, but i cannot think of a method or a reason to test shear in a filament.
Perhaps you could run a torsion test. The torque measured in this test is directly related to shear stress and shear modulus.
