I am trying to do pore size and pore distribution analysis using N2 adsorption/desorption, the sample is prepared using freeze casting technique, so it is bulky porous solid, the question is shall I break the samples and then put in the flask or shall I just keep as it is? (I prepared the sample exactly as the inner diameter of the flask, so place it in is not a problem).

Grinding or breaking the sample won't affect the pore size and pore distribution. If your material is macroporous, I will suggest you not to break and analyze as it is.

Thanks for your experience sharing.
My sample actually includes both mesopore(nano-scale,not necessarily between 2~50nm, but less than 100nm) and macropore(micro-scale). I am wondering if I can use the N2 adsorption method to analyze the pore size distribution (mainly mesopore in the samples) using BJH theory. Since macropore largely exists, do you think the BJH can correctly reflect the distribution of mesopore?

Purely rational thinking, choose the conditions closer to those you will have during material real life use.
I agree with Christian Weinberger that mercury intrusion porosimetry is an excelent option.
