I have done some research into the subject matter you are requesting and to get started below is a very good literature review by Tadlock & Roberts (SRL). The main scholarship authors you will find in the references (see http://www.self-regulation.ca/download/pdf_documents/Self%20Regulated%20Learning.pdf)
This cite is also a very good It is a study of (SDL) secondary ed. study on online learners by Carson (2012) for his dissertation. Also providing you with the scholars of this domain. http://scholar.utc.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1010&context=theses
A note of caution however, (SRL) and (SDL) and Empowered Learners (EL) all have very similar and I mean VERY SIMILAR discriptions of the students, the methods, ect.Another intersting tid bit is the citing back and forth of the same authors in each of (SRL), (SDL), and (EL).
Goggle C.J. Zimmerman on (SRL) and then substitute the word regulated with directed (SDL) and do the same for (EL) you will find the exact same articles by the same author listed. (In EL Zimmerman is not listed but is the co-author of the Cleary article.
