I am currently trying to couple a building block which has a secondary amine group and a carboxylic acid group to a primary amine, in order to get an amide, while retaining the secondary amine element of my building block.
Is this possible without a protecting group, or do I need to protect the secondary amine group before adding the primary amine?

If there is some bulky steric hindrance in the very close vicinity of your senondary amine group there is slight chance that your reaction will go selectively.
But I would not risk wasteing your precious substrate.
Better go for some protective groups.
