Quantum physics is a very exciting field with a broad variety of applications. Personally, I am doing research in quantum information processing, where we cool down tiny electrical circuits to temperatures close to absolute zero. By designing the circuits properly, we can control the states of the quantum processor using microwave light.
Regarding your second question, there are some fundamental phenomena in the quantum world. For example, you can read about quantum tunneling, superposition, entanglement, and particle-wave dualism.
