I too am interested in metrics, the resource by Maben et al is around the high quality care metrics for nursing which is adopted and measured throughout the uk. It really depends on which (high quality) aspect of practice you want to measure, or in terms of the metrics used, these are not standardised, trusts are able to set there own benchmarks in terms of what is measured (audited generally). 

For example, at Leeds Teaching Hospitals in the UK, we use the ward 'healthcheck' metrics, these have a number of criteria that each unit must achieve. 

Search 'ward healthcheck metrics' LTHT.  You will see the criteria for this audit. Also, nurses 'on the shop floor' don't undertake these assessments. It is carried out by senior colleagues and feedback is provided to the senior sister/charge nurse.
