Straw and sapropel (silt) - are they are a waste? I wrote an article that sapropel (silt), poultry manure and straw are organic wastes. My reviewer (opponent) refused it, suggesting they (straw-sapropel - manure - poultry manure) are not a waste. What do you think, How to write correctly this term ?

Poultry manure is a by-product of the poultry industry and a valuable nutrient source.
Straw: by-product from the cereal production which is invaluable in terms of its agronomic value as a C source. Cereal straw is increasingly being sought as a feed-stock for bio-energy industry.
Sapropel is rich in organic matter, macro and micro nutrients. Have many agronomic and industrial uses.

Each country has its own definition of wastes. A usual definition describes "waste" as the material which is not wanted by its generator anymore and is going to be throw away as trash. Thus, by this definition, the materials you mentioned are wastes. However, wastes are not worthless. All wastes you mentioned can be recovered as biodegradable materials using different biological methods such as composting, fermentation, anaerobic digestion, etc.
