This concept (the Internet of Things - IoT) has become increasingly popular. It is expected to offer promising solutions to transform the operation of existing industrial systems such as manufacturing and transportation. However, no studies/papers seem to be available on how advantageous (or disadvantageous) has been the implementation of IoT in industry. Could you provide me with some real evidence/specific cases on this issue?
The Internet of Things can definitely add value. At Intel we use IoT in our manufacturing lines, pulling in and analyzing 5 billion data points a day, which enables us to debug problems faster and anticipate problems. I personally use the empty conference room app described in the Wall Street Journal article that is linked to below. I have also included an interesting link which has NBA basketball player Andre Iguodala talking about how wearables contributed to the his team's championship, as coaches measure load on players and manage practice and playing time to minimize injuries.
On the negative side, IoT security (or lack of) is a severe problem. I have attached a link to a story about a sleeping baby search engine made possible by poor security of IoT. There also have been demos of how to hack into medical devices like insulin pumps.

It actually has many advantages. There are several papers which list the applications and advantages of connected systems in different industries.
But maybe the most important benefit of a connected system is the degree to which that system becomes flexible and can react to changes as fast as possible, because all the building blocks of that systems are connected and can communicate with each other. This later feature helps systems produce highly individualized and customized products which could not be produced before.
