I've been using simple articles (such as "An Astronomer Looks at Astrology" by Andrew Fraknoi) or research papers as alternative assignments for my introductory astronomy course. Many of my students haven't taken physics or astronomy in high school. I develop questions based on these articles or papers, and students have responded positively to such assignments.
