AI is a marvelous tool that can be used to resolve and evaluate any question that can be dealt with is a purely binary, true or false, yes or no, fashion, based on what input/information is made available to it. But far more often true research involves insight, something that could not be derived from any amount of binary fashion. AI operating from 19th century knowledge of physics would never be able to produce quantum physics, rather it would only be able to produce evidence of unsolvable problems.
In more practical terms, AI is marvelous in finding a specific quote, if I can provide sufficient guidelines, or doing the extensive mathematical calculations often needed in research in a relatively short amount of time, possibly discovering unanticipated answers. But it can only work with what is already known, not something totally outside current knowledge.
On a personal scale, I am researching something brand new and have asked AI questions dealing with portions of my research. AI returns nonsensical answers, essentially saying that I am talking nonsense, while other researchers are astounded at my insights.
