Some papers reveal discrepancies between physical and chemical degradations in sea water or distilled water (or fresh water). Degradation rates or water diffusion can differ from a water medium to another. Do you know why ? Is this the pH, the presence of mineral salts, both or another parameter ?
Water is a polar solvent and has high dipole moment. All these properties in water give rise to possess high solvation energy and the affinity to dissolve any salts easily by expending this energy. Sea water with high salt content has already utilised this energy through dissolution of salts and has less energy for further use in comparison to distilled water with no dissolved salts. Hence the distilled water might be more aggressive than sea water .
