Now-a-day it has become very common in most of the institutions that the students don't turn up to classes due to several reasons though the classes are equipped well. Can you all please suggest a better method to keep the students inside the class?
School absenteeism in India can have a great many causes, including illness, chronic illness, family illnesses, part-time work, harvest seasons, the educational status and income of parents, maternal education, family functions, domestic ceremonies, visits to relatives, family problems, teacher–parent communication, preparation for exams, frequent class tests, inability to understand lessons, school truancy, etc., with variations by social group and region. Timely interventions, where they can be formulated and delivered, are contingent on better understanding the nature of the problem.
We have flipped the traditional method of teaching and learning by having our students watch instructional content (primarily lectures and presentations) as videos outside of class time.
Classroom time is devoted to interactions, including case discussions and team exercises. These activities represent a large proportion of the overall assessment so that students have a large incentive to be prepared when they come to class.
I agree with Mr. Olivier and its very true. But at the Postgraduate level the students should be abe to prioritise things and attend the classes to learn more. The attitude of the students also deteriorate year over year. This is where i need your suggestion. Here whether it is true or not, students give number of reasons for their absence. Mr. Maris suggestion is good and we try that too. Thanks for both of you. Let us keep finding solutions.
It is true in our Indian classes that students come just for the attendance. But I think, if the teacher can narrate instances or incidents from around the world, about personalities, maybe even just a news article, it will keep them interested.
