Thickness and width are parameters which affects return loss. Material used and design frequency can also be varied. But width creates fringing field effect. Try for this one according to design structure.
Adding to Smrity, one of the main parameters of the return loss is the operating frequency. So, you have to calculate S11 as a function of frequency. S11 will be lowest at the resonance frequency if you have a resonant antenna. You have to match your antenna to the feed line of the antenna. This is an important point. If there is large mismatch between the antenna and the feed line, S11 will be always relatively high.
If your antenna is a patch antenna, you can as an example refer to paper in the site:www.iosrjournals.org/iosr-jece/papers/Vol7-Issue4/B0740813.pdf?id=6856
It is obviously a feed that affects the impedance match. Once you get the appropriate matching that is better return loss, you can change the width to enhance the impedance matching
