I have synthesized 2,5-furancarboxylate in an alkaline aqueous solution and I want to have it as acid (2,5-furandicarboxylic acid ). What is the best way to purify it from sodium hydroxide?
If you already have the 2,5-furandicarboxylate after alkaline hydrolysis, you could just extract with an organic solvent to remove impurities. Then, just acidify the water layer carefully to pH 2-3 with HCl (e.g., 10 %, v/v). Your product should precipitate so just filter it off, dry under vacuum and analyze. Finally confirm by NMR you have the target molecule.
