Hello, I'm in need of a theory on why we get affected easily by social media, and why it influences us at this day and age. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
SM - is a system that allows instantly inform all the contacts with notifications, which allows keeping people interested, supportive and in a constant circle. That later creates a circle of influence. It depends on who is in the contacts and how you good interacting with your people.
With traditional media - you cannot do it. Because you will not easily find your person after the TV show, and practically impossible to receive feedback.
Social comparison theory / framing theory : People only post what they want others to see. In essence, people usually post their best lives. You don't hear about struggles with depression, fights, with a loved one, or see faces without makeup. People strategically post things that frame their lives in a certain way. As humans, we are constantly comparing ourselves to others. Since we are comparing our lives (the good, the bad, and the ugly) to the perceived "perfect" lives of others, it can cause anxiety and depression.
I guess "social Identity theory" would be beneficial in this regard. It shows how individuals attempt to construct and maintain identity among others in the society.
