All are requested to provide any information known to you regarding use and status of sexed semen in cattle breeding. How it is working in India and its popularity? You can share your any experience as well.
Semen sorting for sex selection is beneficial for cattle breeders as for dairy purpose, they need females for milk production and for beef purpose they prefer males as they have higher meat production potential. The equipment to sort sperm is flow-cytometer. It uses focused laser light to illuminate cells as they pass by the laser beam one at a time in a fluid stream. It takes about three to four times longer to process sexed semen than to process conventional semen and many sperm are lost during this process either they are not alive or not sorted. The dead sperm are eliminated, therefore, less dose is required for insemination. The sorted sperm can be used for A.I. or embryo production. Sperm sorting for sex is not 100% accurate, however, testing embryos for sex is almost 99% accurate. Accuracy for sperm sorting for females is higher than males. It is now a common practice in developed countries and companies exist but in India I am not aware of any company that provide this service.
