Arvind Singh made some good points on pros and cons for GMO foods. Consider this. If a plant like corn is modified to be tolerant to higher levels of pesticides and herbicides (e.g. Monsanto roundup) then it is less safe since it may carry more toxic chemicals that could for example result in increased cancer risk. If it's modified to be resistant to pests, such as corn root worms, so much less or no pesticide can be used, then it's much safer for the farmer and for consumer than all non-GM corn that is not organic.

Given that organic food can to hard to grow at levels needed to feed everyone, we should take advantage of GMO where it is logically better because its modified to be healthier and to need fewer toxic chemicals and feed more people. We should avoid it when it encourages higher use of herbicides and pesticides since in that case it is worse for farmers and consumers may may harm more people.

FYI- all corn is GMO. In that case the GMO was done by years of random uncontrolled mutations plus crosses and selection as the original ancestor plant (teosinte) only few kernels and not amount of food in modern corn. The main genetic change is a regulatory gene. GMO changes by design can be safer than random mutations and selection (as is the origin of rice, wheat and every grain currently grown for food) since you know what the change is. We need more transparency about what GMO means in each case and to better inform farmers and consumers so we all will be safer in my view.
