The SPP propagation length of Au at near infrared wavelength (1000nm) is >100 micrometers and at visible wavelength (650 nm) is 20 micrometers. Since the SPP wave can propagate such a long distance in Au-air interface(or other Au-dielectric interfaces), however, the plasmonic waveguides people designed are only several hundred nanometers in length? Is there anyone can give me some guidance on why they don't design the plasmonic waveguide micro scale in size. Thank a lot.
Hi Chuan, at the near infrared (around 1000nm) the SP mode is not of good "quality", the surface plasmon mode is only weakly confined at these wavelength. I suggest you to check also the penetration depth and use as a figure of merit the division of the propagation length to the penetration depth.
