Hello! I am currently working on my dissertation, and as part of it i have constructed a questionnaire on Survey Monkey. In one of the questions, a matrix type one with ten items with four choices, i made a miscalculation. i graded the scale from 1-4 instead of 0-3 and i already have about 14 answers to it. Now, if i edit the questionnaire and recode the scale from 0-3 how is that going to affect the answers i already have? Are they going to change automatically to conform to the new scale, or is it going to disrupt my whole questionnaire???

What a fun question. My thought is that it will be very bad for your experimental design if the rating changes based on the values of the scale. So if you get a 2.5 on a scale of 0 to 3, and you get a 2.0 on a scale of 1 to 4, then the answer is partly an artifact of the values used in the 4-point scale. I would hope that the difference between a scale of 0 to 3 versus 1 to 4 is so small that you will be unable to detect it within the size of the survey that you are conducting. If there is an effect it might take 200,000,000 surveys, to detect it (if it exists at all). Can you force an effect? If you compare a scale of 0 to 3 versus a scale from 94 to 97 is there a difference in the response? Or how about the difference between 0 to 3 versus A through D? This sounds like a great study on the influence of methodology on outcome. The problem will be in studying the effect in a way that minimizes the chance of introducing more artifacts.

Just leave the scale as you have it now and recode the responses from 1-4 to 0-3 after data collection is completed.
