Learning through different means will lead learners to gain knowledge at different levels and shape their attitude and practice especially beneficial in nursing education and clinical practice. Is there any difference or similarity between Problem-based Learning (PBL) and Challenge-based Learning (CBL) in nursing or health education?
Problem-based learning has been used as a teaching/learning tool over the last 50 years. It has been in used in medicine, allied health sciences, engineering, education, psychology, high schools and others. The educational goals of PBL include integration across subjects, encouragement of self-directed learning, learning in small groups, and enhancing team-work and collaborative learning. The primary aim of PBL in the early years in medical sciences is to use the case to drive learning in a clinical format rather than to solve a problem. Solving the problem and handling uncertainty are secondary goals.
The concept in Challenge-Based Learning is to drive learning in real situation, to help individuals, organisations or communities to handle challenges they are facing. It is more about finding solutions, and changing behaviour, and learning through a journey. During this journey the learner (individual, organisation or community) is working on a challenge, assessing the challenge, looking for solutions, searching the literature, asking questions, looking into priorities, working collaboratively, learning through this journey, from failures, and success, as well as from reflection on the experience. The learner has to act, make changes, evaluate, reflect and improve.
Therefore, there are common and shared things between PBL and challenge based learning. But Challenge Based Learning can be taken at a bigger level, it does not need to be in small groups, but collaboration may be needed. There are no new problems every week. The learner (individual, organisation, or community) may take one problem for 6v month or a year or more and work on the change and evaluation, through a journey. So the applications of each could be different.
Further to what I have said, I think challenge-based learning has a place in training patients, for example, to handle challenges they are facing - for example, patients with chronic health problems. It can also be used in changing behaviour and becoming healthy - smokers, obese people etc. It can also be used with communities and organisations facing challenges to engage them to act on solving the challenge and learning new skills through a learning journey.

Great. The rationale behind CPL is a design of health education program to motivate onself for behavior change of lifestyle to achieve reversal of chronic ill heatlth.
