Studying field ecology of burrowing crayfish is demanding (particularly in primary burrowers). As a result, their life history is poorly understood. Is there any suitable literature on water availability in their burrows during the year? Is it always present (e.g. thanks to the contact with the water table) - mainly during critical events like molting and carrying eggs?

I would think that the burrows must reach the water table in order to keep their gills wet.

Perhaps the water in these burrows is to keep the humidity and decrease the temperature, creating a propitious environment for the crab.
