Personally, I think that research groups should try to support pre and post doctoral researchers wherever possible - especially when/where their work is related to or supports the research group objectives.
I guess therefore, the research groups need to be very clear on their terms of reference. If pre and post doctoral training is one of the objectives, set out in the terms of reference, then all is good.
If it is not, that's a pity. All might not be lost though.....as pre and post doctoral researchers involved in any such group would likely benefit informally from their participation. They will pick up useful information, insights and experiences that support their own research, but this will be a separate, by-product of the research group work itself.
