Dark matter is some extra energy that we observe which bends spacetime such that a star orbiting a galaxy will appear to have escape velocity but will remain in a stable orbit.
When solving for the amount gravity in a system, is the potential and kinetic energy of the system included? For example if I were to integrate over a galaxy to determine the mass, would I also integrate kinetic energy as a function of the radius?
The main point is that I am curious about how is the total gravitational potential of a system calculated. I know the mass of the system is easily summed but what about the electromagnetic energy density and the kinetic energy of the system?
I am familiar with special relativity and semi familiar with GR so please leave a technical response. Also, I ask that only intuitional scholars respond, I do not need any crazy theories, I simply want accepted and scientifically supported solutions.
