the "lowercase pic" indicates a PIC18F(4520) microchip. i would be using an incremental encoder for the position. i want to make a schematic and code for Proteus v8 . but the coding seems to be proving difficult.

If the lowercase 'pic' indicates that you are considering a Microchip PIC microcontroller:
In general, everything starting with dsPIC and incorporating 'MC' (as Motor Control) or maybe 'GP' (as General Purpose) should be applicable.
Though, without knowing which motor type (brushed vs. brushless), evtl. position sensor (none, hall, rotary encoder, ???) and so on, precise recommendations are a bit problematic.
Within the Ardunio universe there is a well documented PID library (see link).
I have used this for a number of projects, including controlling the temperature of a 50W laser diode Peltier cooler, as well as for motor speed control.

It depends on the sampling period, the time constant of the system to adjust and other parameters. In conclusion, I recommend working with "Arduino" because it is simple to program!
