What is the percentage of porosity required for a ceramic material to be classified as porous? Is there such classification? I've seen in literature some consider 30% to be porous, some 65%. Can someone advise?
There is no generally accepted classification of porous ceramics since each sector of application has its own classification principles and rules.
The porous ceramic products can be classified according to the following characteristics:
Chemical composition: oxides ceramics (alumina, zirconia), or non-oxides ceramics (carbides, borides, nitrides, silicides)
Porosity; moderate (30-50%), high (60-75%) or super high (over 75%)
Physical state of products: pieces, continuous, filling
Inner structure: granular, cellular, fibrous
Refractoriness: low melting (bellow 13500 C), high-melting (1350-15800 C), refractory (1580-17700 C), highly refractory (1770-20000 C), super refractory (over 20000 C)
Applications:
Thermal and acoustic insulation
Separation/filtration
Impact absorption
Catalyst supports
Lightweight structures
Porous burners
Energy storage and accumulation
Biomedical devices
Gas sensors
Sonar transducers
