Dusty roads, pot holes, uneven roads, disorder in road usage, ignoring road signs, traffic lights, uncontrolled hooting, air pollution,growing numbers of motorbikes in cities, high number of road accidents. The list of challenges facing African roads are endless, yet all seems normal.
Thats very true. I think it needs our attention and effort, that's what we are currently facing.
These challenges on African roads are indeed significant and need attention for improved road safety and infrastructure.
Basically, a great leadership team is needed to organise funds and contractors to patch pot holes, seal dusty roads, organise line-marking, install speed signs, warn signs etc. and educate the road users to avoid accidents. Road maintenance is key part of road infrastructure management.
I believe there should be set down regulations regarding construction of road networks to meet up standards. The kind of roads being constructed here in Africa are just too bad for the price quotes they mention when asked how much was used. I sometimes wonder if truly the various governments really funded these projects with the taxes of the people. The roads seem more like gifts to enemies.
Having worked for the UN in West Africa for more than a year, i totally agree with you Dr. Catherine, as i saw it with my eyes. In my humble opinion, Geosynthetics is the solution is the magic word. Geosynthetics (Geogrid, Geotextile, Geocells ...etc.) are relatively expensive since most of its material are made of Polyethylene (HDPE), however, Authorities can have local factories to manufacture these kinds of geosynthetic products with alternative materials that will fit for purpose.
Moreover, Another solution is the soil-stabilizers. but this one need to be tested very well for durability for not to be washed away with the first rainy season.
Finally, I agree with Dr. Ravindran that maintenance is key part of road infrastructure management, as i also stated at the introduction of my last paper.
