I have tried so far:
1. acid to methyl/ethyl ester then reflux with hydrazine in methanol/ethanol
2. ester + hydrazine in DMF
3. acid+ thionyl chloride/ POCl3 and Hydrazine hyd in one pot
4. both heating on water bath and domestic microwave used but no diff in TLC seen
Try 1 mmol ethyl-ester with hydrazin hydrate 98% in excess (1:5), in the presence of 2 ml of absolute ethanol, at room temperature (24 h) (stirring)
Try converting the acid into anhydride with acetic anhydride, then, add this dropwise into a mixture of hydrazine hydrate and 40-60 petr. eth. under vigorous stirring under reflux. Distill of the petr. eth. After stirrng for a further one hr. , dump the whole into excess cold water under stirring. Everything other than the hydrazide will go into solution. Filter off the hydrazide and recrystallize from a suitable solvent. The entire reaction can be a two pot procedure.
