Dear colleagues, give me advice. I need to calculate the area of cells from photos. I loop the cell perimeter manually in the ImageJ program. Are there any free or cheap programs that will do this automatically?
We recently developed an ImageJ plugin that I believe would be able to efficiently expedite or automate the tasks in question. The paper describing the plugin, with detailed procedure walk-throughs and tutorial videos is here: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jneumeth.2019.04.009 and on RG as well:Article A Versatile Macro-Based Neurohistological Image Analysis Sui...
The plugin, called "Custom Macros" is free and open source. Our website, where you can find the plugin and more info, is here:

In addition to what you mentioned, the plugin is capable of dynamically calibrating your perimeter and area results output to real-world unit based on user settings and/or filenames.
The 'Threshold Outline Batch' or ' Area Measurement Batch ' functions may be of particular relevance in your case, I think. However, the plugin makes manual tracing of multiple images very fast, as well.
I apologize for the seeming self-promotion. This is the first time I have recommended our software on RG, but I really think it would be a good fit. I would be happy to help with any questions.
