I followed Hermann's suggestion (43 years ago) and it worked out OK. You still need a few suggestions. If you're interested in modeling contaminant transport, here's a paper that describes a case where contaminants were not properly buried, leaked out much to fast, and impacted the public. I won't give any specifics because of the liability, but it makes for interesting reading.
I am agree with Hermann Gruenwald answer, that is the reality. However., if you choose or select a topic by yourself and your advisor have no expertise or interest in the topic, you will have to conduct and reveal the whole research findings by yourself, with formal shadow of supervision. Topic are too many!!!, the best could the one related to your background and so interests.
