PLEs seem to be what we are heading towards in a not too distant future with the emergence of emergency remote learning and online learning following the Covid-19pandemic.
They assist teachers by allowing them to be organized in terms of tools and materials for teaching while they help make learning relatively easier for students as they are able to track their learning resources in a single place. PLEs have great potentials for most learners; I am not too sure about learners with different kinds of special needs.
I'm not sure what you mean by a 'personal learning environment' so my response may not be perfectly on point. However, in my online courses that are of a manageable size (12-15), I make it a point to interact personally with each student initially to establish rapport, then periodically throughout the semester to provide personal feedback, explore areas of understanding, get feedback for their response to what I am doing as their instructor. I also hold online information sessions for the entire class as needed, usually weekly or bi-weekly.
The global COVID-19 crisis has brought forward the need for personalised and flexible learning, so PLEs are needed now more than ever. Regarding flexible learning, micro-credentials are rapidly gaining popularity. Personalised and flexible learning is important for giving learners the skills they need in the constantly changing job market.
