Hi,
We have found some potential parasites on the gills of wild brown trout juveniles, from a forest stream in south-western Sweden. On the gills there are white "balls", which perhaps could be some type of parasite. When the balls are cut open, there are no discernible structures inside. Does anyone know what this could be? I attach a few pictures.
We are quite sure that it is not mussel glochidia.

Really I suspect they are mussel glochidia. It doesn't seem AGD. Amoebas hasn't spheric aspect and ussually are invasive (inside the gill tissue), I mean. Indifierenciate... external (on the gill)... They remind me of the typical Margaritifera glochidia.

DNA analyses of such "balls" showed that they are not M. margaritifera, but did not give further results as the primers used were mussel specific. Furthermore, it was the wrong season and the wrong fish species for potential M.m. infestation. But, true, Ichthyophthirius may be a possibility.

Tell me please what did you observe under light microscope?Is This cyst,or parasites ?If this is Ichthyophtirius you "ll see it's movements(even in cyst) and it has specific structure.But first of all we need your description of this 'balls" by microscopy.
Thank you all for the input. Above, I have added a couple of photos from microscopy - not the best quality. One image show the burst cyst (which has been stored in ethanol), the other image shows what's inside. We are leaning towards myxozoa, based on another lead...
Despite of unclear pictures of cysts I think you are in right direction.I mean Myxozoan infection

in gills of naturally infected Dusky Grouper (Epinephelus guaza)
