I receive regular, useful, references to papers related to papers I have read.
These are presented under the name of an author who is middle ranking and is neither the senior author or the main author. What criteria are used to decide which author is used?
This came specifically to my attention when I was a senior author.
Do you mean papers listed in the so-called "home feed", when you open https://www.researchgate.net/ or click on "Home"? These have the form "X added an article" (or chapter, or book, ...). Please note that: 1) Only authors are displayed who are members of ResearchGate; 2) One of the criteria for selecting publications displayed to you is that you follow one of the authors (who is not necessarly the lead author); 3) Even when you added a paper yourself, it will be indicated in the "home feed" under the name of your co-author, provided he/she is a member of RG. The third case does not make sense, but the automated algorithms obviously does not take into account who created the RG entry of the publication and whether you are one of the authors or not. As far as I remember, a publication may be listed even several times in the "home feed" when there are several authors whom you follow. Details on how the "home feed" works are not known, it is one of the black boxes of RG. The principles listed above are just my own observations. RG's help pages just say: "Your home feed is where you'll discover the latest research and other updates from your network. Simply click Home at the top left of any page to get back to your home feed." (https://explore.researchgate.net/display/support/Getting+started)
