Hey i recently joined PhD in IIT Delhi. My current starting goal is to simulate single phase flow through packed bed reactors using OpenFoam having fluid as air and validate pressure drop with ergun's equation. I also want to improve my fundamentals related to packed bed and solvers for it in OpenFoam. It will be very benificial for me if you could suggest anything.
Also please suggest literature related to above.
I need to study these methods as i am new in this area. Question is that i have a rectangular duct and i want to specify a constant porosity in entire region which will remains constant always. Randomly distributed particles inside this region are of spherical in shape. I just want to setup a case (at present only for single phase having fluid as air) for it to validate simulated pressure drop with the analytical which we get from ergun's equation.
It will also be good if you refer any nice study material or tutorials related to models you suggested and related to packed bed eulerian-eulerian calculations.

Hello,
You can use fixedCoeff model in fvOption and calculate alpha and beta based on Ergun equation for your porous region. Then you don't need to move to multiphase as you define a region with specific permeability.

What I explained is base on my experience. unfortunately, the documentation in OpenFOAM is not strong. No idea if someone published something about it.
Hello, the simulation you want to run depends on the specifics of your physical system and on the detail of data you want to get.
Flow physics:
- is your packed bed a fixed one (no movement of particles due to the flow)?
- are the particles spherical (yes for you, I believe)?
- what is the ratio of the characteristic diameter of the particles to the characteristic dimension of your column?
Detail of data:
- are you interested only in flow?
- do you want to have particle-resolved or particle-unresolved flow simulation?
* For moving spherical particles -> DPM + MPPIC (see lagrangian solvers in OpenFOAM)
* For fixed packed bed and unresolved simulation -> porousSimpleFoam or custom fvOptions (specify resistance to flow in the packed bed)
* For fixed packed bed and resolved simulation -> geometry generation via external program (e.g. blender or basically anything that can give you STL geometry file) + snappyHexMesh + simpleFoam, see e.g. Conference Paper DEM-CFD Study of Flow in a Random Packed Bed
)Note: I assume you are solving two phase (fluid + moving solid) or single phase (fluid + fixed solid) flow. Also, for the case of moving solid particles, DPM and MPPIC give something like "partially particle-resolved" flow data.
I believe that this should help you start with google searches. But I am afraid that nobody will prepare for you a literature survey on your research project.
