Phylogenetic studies suggest that SIVgor may have overcome human restriction factors generating HIV-1 groups P (?O). How Gorillas acquired SIV from chimpanzees (harboring SIVcpz) remains a mystery as Gorillas do not predate on Chimpanzees, where as HIV group M (Epidemic type) in humans is thought to have been acquired from SIVcpz through consumption of bush meat.
Anyone who can help shed more light on this? What are the current theories into how SIVcpz crossed over to infect Gorillas?
