Which mode of presentation is better in the conference or symposium? Why?
The question is less about which is better, and more about what are you aiming to achieve from the presentation. If you are simply looking for academic dissemination so your work is noticed by as many as possible, I would argue that oral presentations will get the attention of more people in a room. However, if you are aiming for a discussion to help develop your ideas and identify new directions for your work, the poster presentation is probably better, since it allows more time for proper debate and discussion. Both modes of communication have benefits!
I prefer Oral Presentation. The audience will pay more attention during oral presentation. Sharp questions may come after the presentation. However, the interaction time allotted for question session is short. But, your work will have a wider reach.
On the other hand, commonly poster presentations are held during tea breaks or end of the day in conferences. The presenter usually prepares a flex/chart and fixes on the allotted board/wall section. The poster will not get more attention from all the audiences. However, a specific person working in your field may interact with you for a longer period during poster session if he notices your poster.
Usually oral presentations are given more weightage and the full papers are published in the conference proceedings. Mostly abstract of poster papers is included in conference proceedings.
If a conference receive more papers, the organizers used to restrict number of entries in oral presentation and dump huge number of papers for poster presentation. This will certainly obscure the reseach work done by the presenter to the whole audience.
In my reseach career, I experienced more satisfaction in oral presentation than poster sessions .
I have experienced that Oral presentation is good for the individual's development in terms of improving the communication skills, reducing the hesitation to face a group of experts etc. However, Poster presentation gives the experts more time to ask you different questions, allows you to explain your work several times and to have healthy discussions which may provide you hints or solutions to your doubts and unsolved problems.
In my opinion both the modes of presentations are good if you prepare yourself to deliver it properly and take it seriously.
So, its difficult for me to comment on which one is better.

I would contribute to the debate; by saying that oral presentation requires more preparation and planning that the poster format. The work is given more seriousness in a presentation than poster. Your communication skills are tested and more interaction is realized. Aim at oral presentations to get more feedback.

Recently my abstract got approved for poster presentation which was my second option while sending the abstract. After reading all comments above, I realized oral and poster presentation have their advantages depending upon what we want to achieve from the presentation.
