Hi everyone,
I am working on applying Energy Storage System (ESS) in power system for ancillary service such as frequency regulation. I use an IEEE test system for study.
I understand the size and location of ESS depends on many factors and is a complex topic.
But can anybody please state if there is any existing thumb rule or general approach to find the location and size of the ESS to improve specifically frequency regulation which can be roughly used for other systems too?

It may be complicated, as you mention and a rule of thumb is hard to find and probably not so useful. An ESS can serve a number of functions and maybe the frequency regulation is the easiest. Still with this one you have to consider the topology of the grid to the possible sources of the power imbalance as well as the maximum power needed, duration as well as the type of intermittent energy sources present in the system. Each service you will contribute with has to be studied carefully and may influence on location. Do you think the location of ESS particularly does not matter for frequency regulation, as it is basically required to pump or absorb power unlike in other stability issues (voltage etc) ? The logic behind being, frequency stability is more related to power balance between net load and net generation.
This is under the assumption that the other constraints such as transmission line loading as well as battery response time etc is met.
