I am looking for recommendations of open source alternatives to Nvivo.
We currently have only 1 licence in our department, and can't afford more. And with the home office work it is particularly difficult to code and analyse data as a team.

Not very sophisticated, but we use excel on a sharepoint site so that we can group code.
I haven't used AQUAD but it looks good and can cope with all different types of data - I definitely want to try it out on audio interview files - might save us from transcribing??!
RQDA seems to have a bit less functionality than AQUAD. Both are compatible with R for quant analysis after qual analysis which is useful.
QDA Miner Lite has GIS capability and links with Tableau.

Out of the ones you recommended David L Morgan which would you recommend for interviews/discourse analysis type work?
It would be great to have a comparison of them all with people's star rating! It's annoying to have to spend so much time trialling each one to make a decision! Would be good to know what you go with in the end and why Dorota Szawarska

Leanne Kelly I think of discourse analysis as relying on intense analysis of carefully selected passages, so I am not sure that any of the qualitative analysis packages add much in that case.
As for working with audio files, there are now a number of programs that use artificial intelligence to do transcription, which has greatly improved the quality. I am not sure about free versions, but I use otter.ai and it is not expensive.
You could go for the General Architecture for Text Engineering (GATE), which is an open-source software toolkit for analyzing and processing any text. Here is the link to download.

I use IRAMUTEQ.
IRAMUTEQ is an open source R-based software that performs both qualitative and quantitative textual analysis.
Wordcloud, Similarities analysis and Descending hierarchical classification are examples of techniques performed by the software.
I use iramuteq. Use Python to clean the database before Iramuteq, depending on the size of your corpus, this will avoid many errors
