// Open Access is on the rise!

Is it? At least I am under the impression that more often I am confronted with OA issues. Recently I got a request if I would like to join a special issue which was planned for open access. And as usual the authors have to pay for it. I never really thought about it before - but now I do - why should I pay for it (I have no institution background which would cover the costs)? So I will put a lot of effort and unpaid time into writing and I will have to pay a substantial amount of money. Why would I do that?

What are the real advantage? Maybe I am missing something!?

  • ok - I like the general idea of knowledge being accessible!
  • Other arguments put forward it has an increased readership. Is that true? I am not sur it in times of research gate and sci-Hub this is really the case because the big publishers have better public relations etc.
  • Indeed, if projects or institutions are paying for it I really like the idea of making research freely accessible. But isn’t it also a downside, that researchers at non-paying institutions face big barriers publishing open access - a little bit of a contradiction right?

Wouldn´t it be time also for research funds to tackle this issue by developing grants to journals for more open access opportunities also for scholars with weaker institutional backrounds? Do those grants exist?

    Any thoughts or experiences?
