I also recommend Moritz recommendation. Gillian Rose is the one to read. Especially beacuse visual content analysis is tailored for bigger heaps of photographs. Iconographic approaches are more suitable for single pictures.

As far as I know MaxQda is suitable for photos aswell, but I'm not sure.

Thank you very much that is a great start. I also work with atlas.ti and I agree it seems to combine the possibilities or text coding and picutre coding very nicely. Thank very much also for the suggested papers. I will take a look at them!

Just anoter related question to you or maybe to others as well: as atlas.ti or MaxQDA are coding and analysis softwares how do you safe or store the photos? Do you use simple folder structure or rather archiving programs such as Adobe Bridge!?

You could also treat it as a visual ethnography as in the work of Pink etc. Technology and software is a good start but the visuality of semiotic phenomenon and the aesthetic dimension mean that much of its impact is instictive. The image either resonates with you or it does not. Try arranging the photographs manually and place them in piles according to your initial interpretation of the image and then themes will emerge. The themes will tell a story which becomes the ethnography. My attempts at visual ethnography relate to individual photographs or small business settings and may not be relevent to your case. Good luck.

@Pradeep yes thanks, and just to make sure for potential further comments I am not looking for any software to analyze qualitative data in general but was more aiming if there is any program helping to handle the biger amount of picture and store them with tags what is indeed not possible with atlas.ti MaxQDA and similar programs. After a little research yesterda, I think I will go for Adobe Bridge and do the analysis with atlas.ti then. However, thanks for the hint! Especially for the paper!

@Taig greata thank you I did not know theses paper yet. They are downloaded and sefed now in my literature!

@Robert thanks for the key word visual ethnography, I think in my case it does make sense to read a bit more in that direction as its quite intersting for my work. Absolutely true as well pointing to that fact that the visual needs space to resonate especially when it comes to interpretation. And yes why not to recclaim the haptic and anaogue way doing analysis.

You should also check out Sarah Pink's work about visual ethnography.

I also liked this article, who employed a multimodal analysis, looking both at

the content of images, but also the composition:
