Are these statements true, in your opinion, and in your university or society? Are all three of them parallel, or is one more prevalent or logical than the other statements? Which one do you agree or disagree with? As academics, teachers, or researchers, can we also be good politicians or businessmen in the future? Better than others? Could academia be a developing ground for future leaders and entrepreneurs? Or should we remain in the profession we enjoy and are currently in? Where is the best place to influence our society and the world, inside or outside of academia, or both?
In my opinion, one can be either 1 of the 3, or all of the 3 simultaneously or 1 to 3 in sequence depending on 1) what you want to achieve in life, 2) what impact you want to bring to community, society or the entire world, 3) the changes of 1 & 2 throughout your life (non-snap shot). The outcome depends on different permutations.
I think they could be true (all 3) as positions, but the real question we could ask is the quality of the job. One could be any of those and still hold that position, no matter what quality if they maintain the position. So technically I disagree with all three, because there is a "real" lurking question behind this.
Some teachers really go from great to nearly burnt out without little passion. Since they perform the act of teaching, they are still referred to as teachers. Some researchers make big results when they are younger than just do little in their field after, but still are considered researchers. In the same way, I've seen academics that do great work but just stick around as ornaments without more to contribute, but their peers still see them as an academic.
For your question about other jobs, I say yes. This can relate to the previous three. Some get "bored" of their work or even do so on the side other jobs. Sometimes if your research is being crippled by a political movement, sometimes it is necessary. I see academia as a place that can brew future entrepreneurs and leaders, but likewise non-academic squares can brew the same depending on the task. I find it is a bit harder these days to get anywhere without an post-secondary degree though.

True, I am academia, teacher and researcher, and will remain so as I enjoy. You know I also worked for some years for a so called development organization with high pay, but I was not happy and I return to university and re-started teaching and research.

There is no such hard and fast "Alignment & Alienation" of any role to a person. Roles also pave way for a professional to grow with Industry requirements. People can be Teacher - Consultant - Researcher.
Fortunately we can change. Objects once very valuable after some times may mean nothing to their owners. Places lose or gain more value. Everything changes. we do change. We can have new dreams and the old ones lose completely their glow. Some people will live always as they were at the beginning of their lives, and some people will reinvent themselves several times in the lives. This is better to say that human beings are ALWAYS changing and it is a pity no changes happen throughout the times.
