I am looking for quotations from ancient times that contain judgments about the intelligence or cognitive abilities of peoples. The word intelligence does not have to appear in them, because this term did not exist yet.
It's important to note that the idea of intelligence and cognitive abilities have been understood and measured in different ways throughout history, and that some of the beliefs held in ancient times may not align with current scientific understanding. With that said, here are some quotes from ancient times that contain judgments about the abilities of different peoples:
1. "The Ethiopians say that their gods are flat-nosed and black, the Thracians that they are blue-eyed and have red hair. Yet if cattle or horses or lions had hands and could draw, and could sculpture like men, then horses would draw the forms of the gods like horses, and cattle like cattle, and they would make the gods' bodies as the form and fashion of their own." - Xenophanes, ancient Greek philosopher and poet, expressing the idea that different cultures have different conceptions of the divine.
2. "These people are not capable of anything great." - Julius Caesar, commenting on the people of Britain in his "Commentaries on the Gallic War."
3. "The Egyptians are intelligent, but in a way that is different from other peoples. They are adept at the exact sciences and geometry, but they are not as capable in abstract reasoning as the Greeks." - Diodorus Siculus, ancient Greek historian, writing about the Egyptians in his "Library of History."
4. "The Persians are not naturally inclined to learning or to crafts, but are skilled in warfare and horsemanship." - Herodotus, ancient Greek historian, writing about the Persians in his "Histories."
5. "The Chinese are intelligent and wise, and they have made many important discoveries and inventions in the arts and sciences." - Marco Polo, Italian merchant and explorer, writing about his travels in China in his "Description of the World."
It's worth noting that these quotes are reflective of the biases and beliefs held by their respective authors, and do not necessarily reflect the actual abilities or qualities of the peoples they are describing. Additionally, it's important to consider the historical and cultural context in which these beliefs were held.

Number 3, Diodorus Siculus about the Egyptians, is downright sensational. He makes a distinction between concrete-operational and formal-operational thinking. Do you have an authoritative source for this (and the others)?
