Do any of you have experience with the analysis of chest wall compartments using a 32-marker model? Currently, we are using the standard 89-marker model, which is very time-consuming. Is it possible to create a 32-marker model in both the SMARTtracker program and analyze it directly in the OEPanalyzer software? Or can we only use 3D point tracks and then calculate volumes, for example, in MATLAB?

Reducing marker load for optical motion tracking is an excellent aim to improve efficiency. Based on my general knowledge of biomechanics instrumentation:
- A 32 marker protocol is certainly possible for broad chest wall kinematics if placements adequately span anatomical landmarks and compartments. But precision may be reduced versus 89 points.
- 30-40 markers can provide sufficient resolution depending on intended metrics and required accuracy. Though more rapid movements may benefit from denser sampling.
- Mapping a subset protocol onto the 89 model may be feasible if the software allows stationary points for missing markers. But directly implementing the 32 model would be cleaner.
- Custom scripts in MATLAB or Python will provide maximum flexibility if the platform does not natively support alternative models. The tradeoff is additional coding.
I would recommend starting with a 32 model directly implemented if your tools allow it. Validate against your current 89 data to quantify information loss. Can supplement with software or script-based interpolation if needed. Please let me know if any other questions arise!
