Hi all.

Forgive me if this question has an obvious answer. google did not really help.

I have a dissertation topic. However, while it is entirely original, similar literature exists that can relate to what i shall focus on. This being said, past research is just that; past. The majority being from from the 90's and earlier with a scattering of articles and dissertations that I could use from the early 2000's.

I'm aware that reference to research, particularly within the Lit review should ideally be fairly recent. My question is this;

If no recent literature exists on my topic, is it acceptable to state this as a "need" for my study and still refer to the older studies in my review?

Apologies if this has been tackled on these forums.
