I have ion chromatgrahy by which different type of cation and anion can be determined . kjeldal nitrogen arrangement is also available but it is not convenient to me rather than ion chromatography. my question is if i test soil sample to determine nitrate instead of total nitrogen. it would be recomanded by guideline or not ?

Thanks to reply. My objective is to determine soil test. If plants take nitrogen from nitrate ,nitrite and if I know the amount should be remain at nitrate form in the soil . Then what is the problem of doing nitrate, nitrite test rather than kjeldal . Another question is standard nitrate, nitrite concentration in soil
Plant roots take up N in the form of nitrate and ammonium ions present in soil solution. As these ions are removed by plants, soil solution is replenished with these ions produced by mineralization of soil organic matter or by applying water-soluble fertilizers. Even when we apply the optimum amount of fertilizers, plants take up more than 50 % N through mineralization of soil organic matter. Coming to your question, a soil test for nitrate+ammonium N provides you with an idea of N that can be taken up by plants at the time of removing the soil sample. In other words, this entity or soil test is very dynamic and is not useful to guide fertilizer application. As a matter of fact, there is no reliable soil test for available N. I suggest you to go through the attached publication of mine. Read it between the lines and you will be able to decide a line of action.
